Swollen Feet During Pregnancy

“If your feet are swollen and they are swelling in the afternoon, that is not a big deal. The only swelling that you should really be concerned about is swelling that comes and stays. If you get up in the morning and your feet are already swollen, then you may start thinking about your blood pressure being too high, or you might be having some problems with your kidneys clearing as they should.

But just ordinary swelling in your feet is a kind of common sign in pregnancy. Especially the later in pregnancy you are, you can expect that a little bit. As long as you are not swelling above the calf of your leg, you are usually fine. And especially if it is in the afternoon. But, if it is something that’s bothering you or you think is a little excessive, then always check with your provider and your provider can help you with that.”

Dietary Causes

“Now, one of the big causes of swelling, especially in your feet like that, is that the blood flow from the body is not the same as it were if you were not pregnant. You have a pregnant belly there that decreases the blood flow.  But a lot of times you just need to watch your salt. And although some people would tell you no salt, no salt is just as bad as too much.”

“If you are swelling in your feet and you are using a lot of salt, I would suggest that you switch salt. But if you’re not using a lot of salt, then that might mean you need to increase your salt. Then you automatically increase your protein. Usually, just another serving or two of protein along with your salt balance would take care of any kind of swelling that you might have.”

When to Tell Your Provider

“But as long as you’re swollen in your feet and it’s later in the day or late in the pregnancy, I wouldn’t be concerned about that. Be concerned if it’s swollen early in the morning. Be concerned if it’s swollen above the calf or your legs. And if that’s the case, then do consult your provider.”
