Perinatologists or Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) Doctor

“A Perinatologist is an OB-GYN who has subspecialty training in maternal-fetal medicine. So in a general OB-GYN residency, which lasts four years. The training is roughly half in obstetrics and half in gynecology. Perinatologists have done an additional three years of training in, for lack of a better word, complicated pregnancies. I think patients frequently like to use the term high risk, and I think that’s not really a great term. I think that a better way to look at patients is to determine what are they at risk for and the perinatologist manages risk. So we evaluate patients to determine what are, what adverse outcomes, what bad outcomes are they potentially at risk for, and then come up with a plan to manage that risk.”
