There are a number of things to think about if you want to avoid a cesarean section. I think one of the first things, especially for new moms, is to just make sure that you go in informed about what labor is like and have some sense of what to expect. If you’re watching this video, you’re probably already one of those moms. The other thing to think about carefully is not just having a doctor or midwife that you like and trust, but having some sense of where they deliver babies because it turns out in 2017, one of the biggest risk factors for getting a c section is not just who takes care of you, but where you go for care. So the hospital really does matter and trying to get some sense of whether or not they’ve got an outrageous c section rate. Small differences might not matter too much, but if they’re one of these hospitals as a really, really high c section rate, it’s something to think about.
